Vivarium was established in 2010 as part of the Boğaziçi University Center for Life Sciences and Technologies. Officially licensed by the Turkish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock since May 8, 2012, the Vivarium has been providing services to both academic and industrial organizations. Furthermore, the unit earned "Full Accreditation" from The Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC International)  in November 2017, becoming Turkey's first internationally accredited laboratory for care and breeding of lab animals.

Experimental animals are used widely in medicine and biotechnology which are among the key R&D areas in Turkey. Basic scientific research involving experimental animals provide guidance for clinical research and promote innovation in the healthcare industry. Similarly, experimental animals are also needed for development in the pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, biomedical, food, agriculture, livestock, environmental protection and biosafety industries. In addition, they are indispensable for the labs of universities which have curriculum in life sciences and technologies.

The Vivarium adheres to the related international norms and domestic regulations and supports national and international projects.

Since its establishment, the  unit has become indispensable for Turkey through special research animals it supplies and experiments it conducts.
