About the Seminar:
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about one in six deaths globally is due to cancer. Among the available treatment methods, photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an emerging modality for treating cancer due to its selectivity and unique mechanism based on generating cytotoxic molecular species as a result of photochemical interactions between light and a non-toxic molecule known as a photosensitizer (PS). Altered tissue properties in tumors including stiffened extracellular matrix, elevated interstitial fluid flow and other fluidic streams induces mechanical stress on tumor cells. Previous research has shown that mechanical stress plays an important role in tumor growth and survival, with increasing implications for therapy design and drug delivery, but remains understudied in the context of PDT. In this seminar, I will present examples of my previous research on PDT as well as my ongoing studies and future directions that center on mechanical stress in the tumor microenvironment.
About the Speaker:
Mustafa Kemal Ruhi received his PhD from Boğaziçi University Institute of Biomedical Engineering. He is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) and North Carolina State University (NC State). His research topics include the various applications of light in medicine, with a focus on targeting strategies in PDT.
